Tuesday Noyes’ Notes/1°Outside Today: Localized Snow Showers, Clipper System & Damaging Wind

Today, a taste of winter persists across New England with a mix of sun and clouds and some localized snow showers. While many of us will stay dry, where the snow does fly,  slippery spots will result, especially across Northern and Western New England. Ocean-effect flurries may also briefly touch the Outer Cape. Daytime highs will range from the upper 20s in the North Country to near 40° in Southern New England, while tonight brings chilly reading in the teens in many areas.

A fast-moving clipper system arrives Wednesday night, ushering in a wintry mix of rain, snow, and gusty winds. Expect a shift to colder air Thursday night into Friday, with biting wind chills making it feel like the teens and 20s at the warmest point of the day Friday.

Here’s what to know for the next 24-48 hours:

  • Tuesday:
    • Scattered coatings of snow in localized spots, especially Northern and Western New England, a few locally higher amounts in any organized bands that develop.
    • Ocean-effect snow showers possible on the Outer Cape (no impact).
    • Highs: 30s South, 20s North.
  • Wednesday – Thursday:
    • Increasing clouds Wednesday
    • Rain/snow arrives west to east late evening into the overnight
    • A general 1-3″ with higher totals in northern New England, less at the coast where it mainly rains.
    • Strong winds (gusts 35-45 mph resulting in pockets of damage) and a significant cold snap follow late Thursday into Friday, lasting through the weekend
  • Friday:
    • Wind chills in the teens and 20s, despite sunshine.
