Tuesday Noyes’ Notes/1°Outside Today: Chance of Lightning,
Small Hail & Graupel

It’s a bit of an unsettled Tuesday across New England, and according to Meteorologist Danielle Noyes, today’s weather setup includes enough cold air aloft to create instability in the atmosphere. That means the door is open for a few brief downpours, isolated rumbles of thunder, and even small hail or graupel — soft snow pellets — particularly mid to late afternoon.

While the day isn’t a washout, showers will be scattered, with the heaviest activity occurring during the afternoon hours. It all settles down by early evening, with clearing skies overnight and sunshine returning for Wednesday.

Wind is a factor today, too. Gusts will generally reach 15–25 mph, but a few of the afternoon downpours could briefly push gusts near 40 mph. Expect a breezy Wednesday as well, with wind gusts region-wide from 25–35 mph and even a few isolated 40 mph gusts possible.

Overnight tonight, as colder air filters in and skies clear for most, mountain snow showers develop — particularly in the higher elevations of northern Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. A coating to an inch is possible in these areas, with 2–3 inches on the highest summits and ridgelines.

Wednesday will be cooler, with highs in the 40s and low 50s and a brisk west wind. But after that? Milder air returns later this week. Check back for an Insights update and don’t miss Monday’s Pattern Predictions video, which looks ahead to Easter and school vacation week!
