Tuesday’s Noyes’ Notes/1°Outside Today: Heat Index Over 100, Pop-Up Storms

It’s all about the heat and the humidity. We’re climbing a few degrees hotter than yesterday, reaching into the 90s with a heat index over 100. Please take it easy out there. During periods of extreme heat and humidity, it’s crucial to stay safe and cool. Hydration is key—drink plenty of water throughout the day. Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing to reflect sunlight and keep cool. Whenever possible, seek shade or air-conditioned environments to avoid overheating. Limit strenuous activities, especially during the hottest parts of the day. Apply sunscreen with a high SPF to protect against UV rays and never leave children or pets in parked cars, as temperatures can rise rapidly. Lastly, check on elderly neighbors and those with health conditions, as they are more vulnerable to heat-related illnesses. More details on today’s forecast in this video or written format below.

Chance of Thunderstorms

There is a chance of thunderstorms late this afternoon through the evening. These storms will be hit or miss, so not everyone will see one, but the risk is there with this heat and humidity in place.

Relief is on the Way

Less humid conditions are expected by Thursday, and this hasn’t changed. Although some people have asked if it will stick around, Matt talked about it yesterday, and it looks like we will enjoy more comfortable humidity for a few days before it starts to creep back up.

Beach Conditions

The beaches will offer some relief today, with average temperatures around 90 degrees. Some spots will reach into the low 90s, while the Cape and Islands will see upper 80s. The Maine coastline will experience 80s to near 90 degrees. Waves will be about 2 to 4 feet, with a moderate rip current risk for the outer Cape and along the South Coast of Nantucket and the Vineyard. Keep an eye on the kids, especially as they head into the water.

Detailed Forecast

  • Today: Temperatures will range from 90 to 95 for many of us from central Vermont into southern New Hampshire. Far northern New England will see 80s with a risk of a thunderstorm during the afternoon to early evening. The thunderstorms will sweep through from west to east, so keep an eye on the western horizon. Lower 90s are expected from Conway to Plymouth, back down to Sebago and Portland. Middle to upper 80s will be the trend along the Crown of Maine and the Maine coastline, feeling humid.
  • Tonight: There won’t be much relief as temperatures drop back into the 70s. Some spots in Western New England might manage upper 60s. The air conditioning will be working on overdrive. If you don’t have air conditioning, you won’t get much relief with the windows open because it’s just so muggy.
  • Wednesday Evening: Northern New England will start to experience some relief from the humidity by Wednesday evening. The rest of us will have to wait until Thursday for the less humid air to arrive.
