Wednesday Noyes’ Notes/1°Outside: Smoky Sky & A Few Showers and Storms

Danielle says there will be some showers and thunderstorms that develop today during the afternoon and evening, but there’s no need to cancel your outdoor plans. You might need to duck inside briefly in some areas, but the rain won’t be widespread – rather, very hit or miss in nature.

Smoke in the Sky

If you noticed smoke in the sky yesterday, you’ll likely see it again today. The smoke, primarily in the upper levels of the atmosphere, will give the sky a hazy appearance. Pockets of smoke, particularly in central and eastern New England, may be thickest this afternoon and evening. While most of the smoke will stay aloft, a little might mix down to the surface, so don’t be surprised if you catch the scent of smoke in some communities.

Shower and Thunderstorm Risk

We’re starting the day with clear skies, but as clouds build through late morning, showers and thunderstorms will begin to pop up in Western New England, upstate New York, and Northern New England. By lunchtime, some storms may also develop in Eastern Massachusetts along the coastline due to a sea breeze. However, these showers won’t be widespread, and any leftover activity will dwindle after 8 p.m.

Temperatures and Humidity

Highs today will range from the upper 70s to mid-80s, with dew points still in the comfortable 50s to lower 60s. Expect a warm afternoon with hazy sunshine and a chance of a brief downpour, rumble of thunder, or gusty wind, especially from 2 to 8 p.m. Tonight, skies will clear with temperatures dropping into the 50s across Western, Central, and Northern New England, and into the 60s in Eastern New England.

Ernesto’s Impact

Tropical Storm Ernesto will likely strengthen to a Hurricane by later today, continuing to move towards Bermuda’s direction in the days to come. It’s a large storm that will bring increased surf and a higher rip current risk as we head into the weekend. We’ll keep you updated on Ernesto in the days to come.
