Wednesday Noyes’ Notes/1°Outside Today: Chance of a Sprinkle, Warm End to the Week

Expect mostly dry conditions today, with just a few sprinkles or an isolated shower possible. Outdoor plans shouldn’t be affected, and temperatures will reach the 60s this afternoon. It’s a warmer stretch ahead, with 70s expected for Thursday and Friday. Saturday may bring some showers, but it won’t be a washout, with the highest chance in northern New England.  Stay tuned for Insights, where we’ll take a deep dive through the weekend so you can plan your days with ease.  Read on for the National and Northeast weather summaries.

National Meteorological Summary:

A high-pressure system anchored over the Canadian Maritimes will maintain generally dry conditions across much of the U.S., but there are several key weather systems impacting localized areas.

  • Heat Wave in the Southwest: Record-breaking heat continues for the Southwest, with many locations experiencing highs in the triple digits, including the San Francisco, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles metropolitan areas. Excessive heat warnings remain in effect for parts of Arizona and Southern California. The heat wave is expected to persist into the weekend, with high temperatures 10-20°F above normal.
  • Fire Weather in the High Plains: Dry and windy conditions will persist over the Northern and Central High Plains, maintaining a critical fire weather risk. Red Flag Warnings are in place across the region.
  • Cold Front and Scattered Showers: A weak cold front will pass through parts of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, bringing a chance of light showers, though significant rainfall is not expected. Additionally, localized rainfall along the Gulf Coast and central Florida is possible, driven by moisture convergence along stationary fronts.

Northeast Weather Story:

For today, high pressure over the Northeast will slowly slide offshore, allowing a weak cold front to approach from the west. While this front brings increasing clouds, especially during the afternoon, it is moisture-starved, limiting the rainfall to just a few scattered light showers across interior New York and New England.

  • Temperature: Daytime highs will range from the mid-60s to near 70°F, which is seasonable for early October. Overnight lows will dip into the 40s and 50s.
  • Rainfall: While a few locations in the Hudson Valley, western New York, and Vermont may see brief light showers, rainfall amounts will generally be less than a tenth of an inch. Eastern parts of New England, including Massachusetts and Maine, are likely to stay dry.
  • Cloud Cover: Expect partly to mostly cloudy skies, with overcast conditions lingering for much of the day as the front approaches. The best chance for sunshine will be during the early morning before the clouds increase.
  • Impacts: This weather setup will have minimal impacts. Travelers and outdoor plans will face little to no disruption, although the overcast skies and brief showers in some areas may affect visibility slightly. Marine interests should note that seas remain generally calm, but persistent easterly winds may generate minor coastal flooding along back bays of Long Island and New York City due to high astronomical tides.
