Wednesday’s Noyes’ Notes/1°Outside Today: Last Day of Intense Heat & Humidity, Another Round of Storms

Today is the last day of intense heat and humidity before some welcome relief arrives tomorrow. Expect heat index values to soar to around 100 again in parts of central and southern New England. Another round of thunder will develop during the early to mid afternoon and slide east through the evening; some storms could become severe so keep an eye to the western sky later on today. Ofcourse we’ll keep you posted on that threat and pop-up live if necessary. Full forecast details with Danielle in the video or written form below.

Today’s Weather Forecast

  • Heat and Humidity: Dew points will gradually drop through the day tomorrow, providing some relief from this sticky stretch. However, the immediate South Coast and the Cape will take a bit longer to feel the drier air.
  • Temperatures: Expect 90 to 95 degrees in many areas, with the hottest spots from Manchester down to Lawrence. Southern New Hampshire and the Merrimack Valley will also hit 90 plus degrees. Areas like Laconia, Fryeburg, Bangor, Augusta, and Boston will see another day of 90+ degree temperatures (makes heat wave official in many areas, including Boston  -2nd of the summer). The South Coast and far northern New England will experience temperatures in the 80s.

Heat Index and Beach Conditions

  • Heat Index: With high humidity, the heat index value will soar to upper 90s to around 100 degrees in the hottest spots.
  • Beaches: Hazy, hot, and humid with temperatures around 90. The Cape and Islands will be in the 80s. High tide will be mid-morning, and the UV index is very high, so remember to apply and reapply sunblock. Waves will be 2 to 4 feet, with higher wave action along the South Coast and the outer Cape. The rip current risk is moderate to high, so be cautious and keep a close eye on children.

Thunderstorm Threat

  • Severe Threat: Isolated to few thunderstorms are expected in the yellow and green areas, with the greatest risk north and west of Boston, stretching from Southern New Hampshire down into Connecticut. Action will also come out of New York City and head towards New Jersey.
  • Timing: This morning and early afternoon will be relatively calm, with varying amounts of high thin clouds and some bubbly ones popping up. Between 2 and 4 p.m., expect action in Western New England. By 4 or 5 p.m., thunderstorms will still be well inland, with the potential to become strong to severe due to the heat and humidity and the approaching cold front. Between 6-8 p.m., thunderstorms will continue to move east – likely experiencing a weakening trend after that.

Evening and Overnight Forecast

  • Concerns: The biggest concerns today are damaging winds, heavy rainfall, and lightning. Be prepared to seek shelter if a severe thunderstorm warning is issued for your area. The action should weaken as it moves into eastern Massachusetts late this evening and overnight.
  • Tonight: Expect lingering showers, with an isolated rumble of thunder possible during the first part of the night. Mostly cloudy skies with patchy fog will develop, and overnight lows will drop back into the 60s in Western and Central New England, and low 70s farther east.
