New England is bracing for a February snowstorm this weekend, with widespread heavy snowfall expected across the region. The storm arrives Saturday evening, intensifies overnight, and wraps up by midday Sunday. While this system will move quickly, it will pack a punch with accumulating snow and tricky travel conditions – Matt Noyes has details in the video.
Saturday will be dry, allowing time for storm preparations. Snow generally begins between 7-10 PM Saturday, later in Maine, quickly spreading across southern and central New England. By midnight, most of the region will be seeing steady, accumulating snow. The heaviest snowfall rates will occur overnight into early Sunday morning, with snowfall rates of 1-2 inches per hour possible in heavier bands.
By 10 AM Sunday, the worst of the storm will be over for most, though light snow and ocean-enhanced flurries may linger into the afternoon, particularly along the South Shore and Cape Cod. Winds will turn northerly, potentially leading to blowing and drifting snow before skies begin to clear later in the day.
It’s worth noting the storm has just moved over California so data will improve in the coming 12-18 hours, so a meaningful change is still possible, but the latest data suggests 6-8 inches of snow will fall across much of southern and central New England, with a broad 4-6 inch swath even in the North Country owing to a fluffier snow consistency. Worst case? Over a foot in Southern New England.
