New England is set for another round of wintry weather as snow moves in Sunday evening, followed by a sharp warm-up Monday. This next system will bring a coating to 2 inches of snow in southern New England and a widespread 2-4 inches farther north before temperatures rise well into the 40s on Monday, melting much of what falls.
Until then, watch for slippery travel as the temperatures drop Saturday morning and continue to fall much of the day. Some lingering snow showers or flurries are possible in far southeastern New England, winding down on Cape Cod by early afternoon. High pressure builds in after that, bringing briefly dry weather for the remainder of Saturday. By Sunday, clouds thicken ahead of our next system, with snow developing between 4 and 6 PM and spreading east. While most of New England will see accumulating snow, warming temperatures will likely cause a mix or changeover to rain south of the Mass Pike overnight.
By Monday morning, snow will have tapered off, but lingering rain or snow showers may persist in far northern New England. A strong southwest wind will send temperatures into the 40s for most areas, melting much of the fresh snowfall.
Colder air quickly returns Tuesday, bringing a more seasonable feel to the region with highs back in the 30s. As we move through midweek, another storm system approaches, likely bringing another mix of rain and snow Wednesday into Thursday, though the timing and amounts are uncertain this far out.
Looking ahead, the active pattern continues, with another system potentially impacting New England around the 9th/10th and another during the February 12-13 timeframe. With temperatures fluctuating between bitter cold and brief warm spells, each system will bring its own set of forecast challenges – so stay tuned!
