Many across New England will officially see a white Christmas, with at least an inch of snow on the ground by 7AM Christmas morning. For Boston, this is the first white Christmas since 2017, and snow lovers have more to look forward to with a fast-moving clipper system tonight into Christmas Eve morning, adding a light coating to a few inches of fresh snow for parts of the region. Check out the national snow depth map in the video to see who else has snow across the country.
This evening, a weak clipper system zips through New England, bringing snow showers to northern and central areas first. By late evening, snow will expand southward, mixing with raindrops near Cape Cod and along the South Coast. Most precipitation wraps up by midday Tuesday, leaving behind additional accumulations of 2-4 inches across much of northern New England, 3-6 inches in the higher terrain, and 1-2 inches or less in southern New England. Danielle has detailed timing & an accumulation map in the video from earlier.
Christmas Eve & Christmas Day Forecast
Christmas Eve features variable clouds and a chilly night as Santa makes his rounds. Overnight lows drop into the teens and lower 20s, with calm winds aiding travel. Christmas Day will be a quiet but chilly one, with highs near 30 degrees in southern New England and 20s to the north. While sunshine dominates early, clouds increase along the coast later in the day, and there’s a slight chance for a flurry or raindrop near the shore in the evening.
Looking Toward the Weekend
The rest of the week looks quiet and seasonably chilly. Highs stay in the 30s to around 40 (slowly moderating a little bit each day), with lows generally in the teens north to 20s south. The next chance for widespread precipitation comes by Sunday, when another system may bring rain or snow depending on its track and temperatures.
