Did you know you can track potential tropical storms, tropical depressions, tropical storms and hurricanes anytime, right in our Noyes’ 1DegreeOutside Weather app? Matt Noyes shows you how in this video!
Current Tropical Activity
As of Tuesday afternoon, we have “Potential Tropical Cyclone One” in the Gulf of Mexico. As of this Tuesday midday post, it hasn’t yet developed into a depression or storm, but the Hurricane Center expects it to become Tropical Storm Alberto by Wednesday morning as it moves across the Gulf’s warm waters. This storm is currently projected to strengthen to a 50 mph storm and make landfall in Northeast Mexico, just south of Texas, later in the week.
Using the App to Track the Tropics
You can track this and other tropical systems using our Noyes’ 1DegreeOutside Weather app. Here’s a step-by-step guide:
- Open the App: Start by opening the Noyes’ 1DegreeOutside Weather app.
- Access Radar Tab: Navigate to the radar tab, which shows storms and radar imagery. I always recommend using the “past plus future” mode to see the loop up until now and the next few hours of incoming weather.
- Tap the Three Dots: At the bottom right, tap the three dots to access additional options. Normally, the app is set to show precipitation (radar).
- Select Precipitation and Clouds: Skip the 24-hour future mode and go to “precipitation and clouds.” This setting combines satellite (clouds) and radar (precipitation) imagery.
- Enable Overlays: Tap “overlays” to see available options. Select “tropical tracks” to view the paths of tropical systems. Move the view to the Gulf of Mexico to track the current storm.
- Interact with the Track: Tap on the storm or any point along its forecast path to see detailed information. For example, you can see the estimated maximum winds and forecast strength along the path.
- Turn on Alerts: In the overlays menu, you can also enable Tropical warnings. Tap on any warning area, such as the tropical storm warning along the Texas coast, to get full text details.
- Reset Settings: After tracking the storm, reset the app to your preferred settings to monitor local severe weather…though I personally leave the tropical tracks overlay on all the time, even when switching between different radar views. This way, I never miss any tropical activity.
We’ll continue to provide updates on tropical systems throughout the season at 1DegreeOutside.com.
Have a great day and enjoy using the app!
