Sunday Evening Essentials: Smoke, Pollen and Summer Heat Define the Week Ahead

It’s not just a new week in New England – it’s a whole new season. After a weekend that cleaned up fairly nicely, summer is ready to flip the switch across the region. Meteorologist Matt Noyes breaks it down in your Sunday Evening Essentials forecast video.

Expect a pleasant Monday, but that’s the last “spring-like” day for a bit. We warm up significantly through midweek, with highs reaching the 90s for some by Wednesday and Thursday. Along with the heat comes a southwesterly wind that may pull surface-level smoke from ongoing Canadian and Texas wildfires into New England, reducing air quality – especially Wednesday and Thursday. If you’re sensitive to pollution or wildfire smoke, you’ll want to take note.

Humidity increases as well, setting the stage for thunderstorms. Storms may pop Thursday afternoon and again on Friday, some possibly strong. A slow-moving front could stall enough to keep showers in the picture for Saturday, though that detail remains uncertain for now.

Meanwhile, water temperatures in the 40s to low 50s mean it’s still dangerous for unprotected swimmers or boaters. Dress for the water, not the air, if you’re headed out for activities on the ocean or lakes.

Highs near 70 on Monday give way to upper 70s Tuesday, and then the heat surges: 90s are possible both Wednesday and Thursday. The heat wave threshold is three days at or above 90°, and while most won’t hit that, the heat will be felt either way.
