Thursday brings a much-needed shift for New England after this week’s historic heat. As Danielle Noyes explains in today’s 1DegreeOutside Insights, an onshore wind is ushering in fresh, less humid air across the region, dropping temperatures by as much as 20 to 30 degrees.
Highs on Thursday settle into the 70s – upper 60s along the coast – and dew points are finally falling, making it a great day to crack open the windows and give the AC a break.
But while the air is more comfortable, it won’t stay dry forever. A series of small disturbances in a west-to-east (“zonal”) jet stream flow will bring on-and-off showers Friday through Sunday, especially in northern New England, where heavier rain may fall. Friday night into Saturday is the most active period for rain, with southern New England seeing mostly spotty showers and downpours.
Still, it’s not a weekend washout. Danielle suggests umbrellas over cancellations. Even at Fenway Park, the Red Sox vs. Blue Jays games should get in – just plan for a few raindrops, particularly for Saturday’s game.
Next week? Warmer and more humid again, with highs back in the 80s and a daily risk for thunderstorms. It won’t be the oppressive heat of earlier this week, but it will feel like summer again.
