Thursday Insights: Heat & Storms Friday, Great Saturday, Watching Sunday Closely

Matt Noyes has a look at Friday’s incoming deep heat and humidity, severe thunderstorm chance, and details on the weekend – when he says Saturday looks great, but Sunday is being watched for the exact track and timing of a disturbance that should cause showers or rain, depending on your location.

We’ve been working on some exciting private forecasting initiatives, including our new partnership with New Hampshire State Parks, where we’re now delivering rip current forecasts for Hampton Beach. It’s part of our mission to make a meaningful difference across the region.

Now, let’s talk about Friday – a scorcher across much of New England with forecast highs between 96–98°F in Boston, flirting with a daily record set in 1882. Factor in the dew point near 70°, and the heat index may exceed 105°F in spots. The heat sets the stage for strong to potentially severe thunderstorms, with the best chances for damaging wind gusts between 3 PM and 5 PM, according to our in-house 1DegreeOutside prediction system. A secondary storm window may occur from 6–8 PM but looks less impactful.

For those in northern New England, storms start much earlier – as soon as 9 AM, tied to a prefrontal trough. Southern zones heat up before storms arrive. Flash flooding is not a widespread concern, thanks to fast-moving cells, though localized downpours could bring over an inch of rain.

After the cold front moves through Friday night, expect a beautiful and more comfortable Saturday, though we will have to contend with wildfire smoke, especially at surface levels in the mountains of northern New England.

Sunday remains a bit uncertain with regard to specifics, hinging on the track of an incoming surface low. Morning activities look fine, but midday and afternoon could bring showers or strong storms—especially in southern areas if we enter the “warm sector,” while Northern New England may be in line for more drawn out showers.

Looking ahead, Monday likely returns to the 90s for many, continuing the summer heat. The latest dew point and “feels like” projections are available to our 1DegreeOutside members.
