Tuesday 1°Outside Today/Noyes’ Notes:
As Heat Peaks,
Smoky Skies Expand

It’s a steamy start to Tuesday across New England and the combination of wildfire smoke and heat could spell trouble, especially for those with respiratory sensitivities.

After drifting through Northern New England yesterday, Canadian wildfire smoke has shifted into Southern New England this morning, reducing air quality. Expect a noticeable haze in the sky, and for those with asthma or other respiratory conditions, today may be a good one to keep indoor plans if possible.

Meanwhile, high humidity continues with dew points in the upper 60s and even low 70s in some locations. That means it will feel like 100–105°F for many in Central and Southern New England. There’s little relief in sight today, as sea breezes are weak or delayed until late afternoon – especially for the city of Boston and areas just inland.

In terms of rain and thunder, there’s very little expected today. An isolated afternoon thunderstorm can’t be ruled out in far Northern Vermont, Northern New Hampshire, and the Crown of Maine, but most of us stay dry. Skies will range from mostly sunny to hazy, with fog from early morning already lifting into clouds along the South Coast and Cape before breaking up.

Tonight brings another muggy overnight, with low temperatures in the 70s for much of Central and Southern New England. Northern areas will cool off a bit more, but even there, it remains a humid night.

Looking ahead: Wednesday brings an increased chance for scattered afternoon storms, and Thursday into Friday could feature repeated rounds of downpours and localized flooding—covered in more detail in our latest Insights video still available on the app and website.
