Tuesday Insights:
Thunder Risk Returns,
Some Storms Could Become Severe

After a stretch of hot and hazy weather, changes are coming. Wildfire smoke will build again Tuesday into Wednesday, making a return appearance in Central and Southern New England especially. You may see that milky haze on the horizon or even smell it again, particularly by Wednesday afternoon.

More importantly, we turn our attention to strong to severe thunderstorms on Wednesday afternoon and evening. A slow-moving cold front will slide into New England, triggering scattered storms after 2–3 PM. These storms may linger into the evening and even overnight (non-severe at that point), bringing brief damaging wind gusts and locally heavy rainfall, with the potential for minor flooding given their slow-moving nature.

That front doesn’t leave quickly – it wobbles near or just south of New England, and waves of moisture ride along it. That will lead to widespread showers, embedded downpours, and thunderstorms on Thursday, continuing into early Friday. Atmospheric moisture will be deep, with dew points high and energy from the west streaming in. This sets the stage for pockets of 2–4 inches of rain, especially in Southern New England, where flash flooding is most likely. To narrow down where exactly the higher rainfall totals will be placed is difficult a couple days in advance, so stay tuned over the next couple days for updates.

Friday will improve slowly, with areas of rain early and drier, more comfortable air arriving in the afternoon (north to south). That trend continues into the weekend.

Both Saturday and Sunday look pleasant, with less humidity, sunshine, and slightly cooler-than-average temperatures thanks to high pressure building in from the north. Sunday will be the warmer day of the two, but both offer a much-needed break from the unsettled stretch.
