New England kicks off the week with the first of several 90°+ days ahead. While this qualifies as a heat wave for many inland areas, it won’t feel oppressively humid. Dew points will mostly be in the low to mid 60s – noticeable but far from tropical. In fact, some spots will dip into the upper 50s for dew points, keeping the air more tolerable than on those muggy summer days with readings near 70°.
Today’s heat risk is in the moderate category for much of the region, with a major category for the Champlain Valley, Merrimack Valley, and parts of central and northern Maine. Afternoon highs will reach 90–95° inland, while a sea breeze keeps the immediate coast and Cape Cod cooler.
For most, it’s a dry day. The best chance for an isolated thunderstorm will be in far northeastern Vermont, northern New Hampshire, and northwestern Maine. Clear skies tonight will allow for a gradual cool-down, with overnight lows from 60° to the upper 60s – comfortable enough to give the AC a break in some homes – though it may take most of the night for the house to cool off.
Looking ahead, this heat wave continues through at least Wednesday, with the best rain chance late Wednesday into Thursday as a cold front approaches. Moisture will be limited, so any showers or thunderstorms will be scattered at best.
Meanwhile, the tropics are becoming more active as we approach the climatological peak of hurricane season. We’ll have an update in our Insights video later this morning.
