Thursday will bring a shift in our weather pattern as a cold front moves into New England. While temperatures won’t be as hot as recent days, humidity will remain elevated, and the approaching front will trigger scattered showers and thunderstorms from midday through the evening, especially across central, eastern, and southern New England.
Most storms will be garden-variety summer cells, but a few could pack brief gusty winds and heavy downpours. Lightning will be the main hazard, so if you’re outdoors, be prepared to move inside — “When thunder roars, go indoors.” Localized flooding is possible in any of the strong storms that develop and brief gusty wind can’t be ruled out.
By Friday, fresh high pressure from eastern Canada will sweep in drier air, dropping dew points and making for a pleasant day across the region. Saturday stays dry for most, with only a slight chance of an isolated shower in far western Massachusetts and Connecticut. Sunshine and highs in the 80s will make it a stellar mid-August day.
Sunday will start sunny but turn warmer, with highs near 90 ahead of another cold front. Northern New England may see afternoon thunderstorms, with cooler air settling in next week.

Tropical Storm Erin continues its westward journey in the Atlantic, likely strengthening into a hurricane by Thursday night and reaching major hurricane status over the weekend. While it’s far from New England, 1DegreeOutside is monitoring the track closely.
