It’s a refreshing back-to-school Tuesday across New England, with the weather cooperating perfectly for those first-day photos. The morning begins crisp and cool, with 40s in the north and far interior and 50s elsewhere. Kids may want a light jacket or zip-up for the bus stop, but by afternoon shorts and short sleeves will be just fine.
Bright sunshine and comfortable air dominate today, with highs reaching the mid to upper 70s for most – slightly cooler at 65 to 70 degrees across northern Maine. Winds from the west-southwest will run 10 to 20 mph, with higher gusts earlier in the day. Fair-weather clouds will bubble up in the afternoon, and while a stray sprinkle is possible over the Green and White Mountains, it’s not enough to ruin what will be a pleasant day.
Tonight turns comfortably cool again. Northern and interior areas will fall back into the 40s, with many others in the 50s – great for open-window sleeping. A few scattered clouds may linger across southern New England, and there’s even a chance of a very isolated shower, but most stay dry.
The stretch of refreshing weather continues into midweek before a more unsettled setup develops. Scattered showers are likely by Friday as a system approaches, but the holiday weekend does not feature any big heat. Instead, expect low humidity and temperatures in the 70s to near 80 by Sunday and Labor Day Monday.
