Friday 1°Outside Today/Noyes’ Notes: Unsettled Day Ahead, Downpours, Lightning & Small Hail

It’s a unsettled end to the week across New England today.  It’s a cool start out there and some kids may be grabbing a zip-up or long sleeve before they leave for school. Afternoon highs will only reach the 60s north and lower 70s south – below average for this time of year.

A new round of scattered showers and thunderstorms will develop as early as mid to late morning and continue into the afternoon. These storms won’t affect everyone, but where they do hit, expect downpours, lightning, brief gusty wind, and even small hail thanks to cold air aloft. The most active period will be lunchtime through the evening commute, before activity fades by 9–10 PM. A few downpours may linger across Maine and the South Shore/Cape Cod a little later.

Overnight, skies clear and temperatures dip into the 40s across western, central, and northern New England, with 50s elsewhere.

The Labor Day weekend theme:

  • Cool, crisp mornings followed by pleasant afternoons

  • Sea breezes at the coast each day

  • Low humidity and mostly dry conditions

  • Only exception: a few lingering showers far northern New England, especially on Satruday
