Friday 1°Outside Today/Noyes’ Notes:
Damaging Wind Gusts Possible Despite Low Humidity

As we close out the work week, Friday brings a bit more active weather across northern and western New England, where isolated showers and thunderstorms will be more widespread than earlier this week. While most of southern New England avoids the storms, those in the Greens, Whites, Berkshires, Lakes Region, and Monadnock Region should stay weather aware this afternoon and evening.

Interestingly, even without oppressive humidity, stronger storms can still produce damaging wind gusts. That’s because dry air, when cooled by rain inside a storm, can sink quickly – sometimes forcefully – toward the ground, creating what’s known as a dry microburst. So, a few damaging gusts are possible in today’s strongest storms. The free 1DegreeOutside weather app is the best way to track storm development near your location.

Friday temperatures will climb to the 80s inland, while coastal spots like Boston, Cape Cod, and southern Maine stay in the 70s to near 80, thanks to a light onshore breeze. Dew points remain mostly in the 50s, though they’ll rise slightly into the 60s across parts of northern Vermont and New Hampshire, adding a touch of humidity there.

Any storms that do develop will fade this evening, and overnight lows drop into the 50s – perfect for sleeping with the windows open. The comfortable, dry air sticks around through Sunday, delivering a stellar weekend forecast.
