Friday 1°Outside Today/Noyes Notes:
Strong to Severe Thunderstorms Possible

After a stretch of tranquil weather, Friday brings a burst of heat and storms to New England. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will develop from midday through early evening, with the most active period expected between 1 PM and 8 PM. While not everyone will see a storm – and not every storm will turn severe – the ingredients are in place for a few strong to severe thunderstorms.

Storms that do develop may contain damaging wind gusts, brief torrential downpours, and frequent lightning. Flash flooding is not a widespread concern, as storm cells will keep moving, but isolated areas could see over an inch of rain in a short time.

The other headline is the heat. Highs today will soar into the 90s for many, with dew points in the low to mid 70s, creating heat index values between 100 and 105°F in central and southern New England. Even the South Coast will flirt with 90°, and Cape Cod reaches well into the 80s. In Boston, we’ll challenge the daily record of 96°. Only northernmost parts of New England (and to some extend Cape Cod) will escape the most intense heat, staying in the 70s.

The 1DegreeOutside livestream will be active as severe weather warrants, and you can follow along on our free app with interactive radar and storm alerts. Just be sure to turn your location and alert settings on.

Tonight, skies clear as a cold front slides through. The result is a big change for Saturday: sunshine, lower humidity, and refreshing air with morning lows in the 50s and 60s – yes, even open-window weather in the North Country.

Looking ahead, humidity builds again Sunday with another round of showers and storms possible, and we’ll have updates later today and tomorrow morning to fine-tune the forecast.
