Midweek Insights: Heat Index Over 100 Friday, Chance of Severe Storms

Heat & humidity will continue to build over the Northeast to end the week. Thursday will be hot and humid, but it’s Friday that packs the real punch: highs between 92–98°, with heat index values from 100–105° for many. While the hottest locations will be in the Merrimack Valley, Metro West, and potentially Boston – where hitting 100 is not out of the question.

The risk of scattered thunderstorms increases Friday, particularly during the afternoon and early evening, and while not every storm will be severe, some could bring damaging winds, small hail, brief localized flooding and frequent lightning. Northern and Western New England will see the storm chances earliest; Central and Southern areas later in the day.

The front ushers in drier and somewhat cooler air for Saturday, offering a temporary break from the intense heat & humidity. Highs will settle in the 80s, with onshore breezes keeping the coast cooler. Sunday turns sticky again, and with a stalled front nearby, additional showers or storms may develop – most likely in Western New England.

Beyond the weekend, humidity lingers to start next week, and the heat returns quickly. By Tuesday, many locations will flirt will exceed 90° once more.
