Now to the weather.

The overall pattern features lingering upper-level energy from a low near Hudson Bay, which will be the driver of unsettled conditions late this week into the start of the holiday weekend. While much of the U.S. turns warmer, New England stays a touch cooler than average with refreshing air and comfortable nights.

Thursday will be pleasant, with filtered sunshine as high thin clouds blot out the sky at times. Highs reach the 70s, with 40s and 50s overnight.

Friday is the most unsettled day of the stretch. Expect scattered showers and downpours, some embedded thunder, and even locally heavy rainfall in spots. It won’t rain everywhere all day, but it’s definitely a day to keep an eye on the radar and have rain gear on standby.

Saturday sees the front offshore, but lingering energy will keep scattered showers and downpours going in northern New England. Farther south, expect sun to start, then bubbling clouds – a few sprinkles possible, but not a day to cancel plans.

Sunday looks nice overall, with highs in the mid to upper 70s and sunshine mixing with clouds. A lingering shower is possible in the far north.

Labor Day Monday should be the best day of the holiday stretch: a blend of sun and clouds, sea breezes along the coast keeping shoreline highs near 70, with inland spots reaching the mid to upper 70s.

Each night stays comfortable in the 40s and 50s, with patchy fog possible in valleys. Humidity remains in check except for a brief bump up on Friday.

The bottom line: Friday is the day to watch for showers and downpours, Saturday holds a few lingering northern showers, but Sunday and especially Labor Day itself look pleasant and seasonable.
