Our daughter summed it up perfectly this morning – “Mom, do you smell that? It’s the early fall feel.” That crisp, cool air is here to stay much of the week.
Highs will hold in the 70s across most of New England until Friday, coolest along the coast with an onshore breeze. Nights stay comfortably cool in the 50s, even 40s in spots north.
The only interruption? A few midweek showers, mostly across Northern New England Wednesday. These aren’t washouts – just spotty, passing showers with some clouds that may keep temps in the 60s north.
Offshore, Hurricane Erin is the main weather story. Erin is a large and powerful Category 4 storm, expected to remain a major hurricane through Wednesday as it tracks between Bermuda and the Outer Banks, then curves northeast. While New England will stay well away from her center, Erin’s sheer size means impacts reach hundreds of miles outward.
Surf & Rip Current Risk: Building as early as Tuesday, peaking Thursday and Friday. Breaking waves 5–10 ft on South Coast beaches, with offshore seas reaching 20–40 ft. Even as Erin exits into the North Atlantic this weekend, waves linger 4–8 ft Saturday.
Marine Concerns: Dangerous seas and rip currents pose life-threatening risks up and down the Eastern Seaboard, including New England.
Bottom line: A comfortable, mostly dry week inland, but coastal waters are a different story. Use extreme caution if you’re heading to the ocean later this week.
