Meteorologist Danielle Noyes here with your latest Pattern Predictions, our deep dive into what drives the forecast for the next two weeks. While the 14-day forecast is always available in the 1DegreeOutside app, this is the story behind the numbers – and why things may shift as we go along.
Right now, the jet stream is dipping across the Great Lakes into New England, a trough pattern that favors cooler-than-average air. Average highs this time of year are in the upper 70s, and many of us will run near or slightly below that through late week. Behind the cold front, drier air settles in, delivering crisp nights in the 50s – even 40s in northern New England.
Looking toward the holiday weekend, Friday brings our highest chance of unsettled weather as a slow-moving front drags across the region, producing scattered showers and perhaps a thunderstorm. Clouds may hold temperatures down near 70 in the north, with mid 70s south. Saturday improves with brighter skies, though onshore winds will keep the coast cooler. Sunday and Labor Day Monday look like the most pleasant of the bunch – sunshine, comfortable humidity, and highs in the mid to upper 70s.
The longer-range pattern shows a warm ridge building back into the East around September 4–6. That will boost temperatures into the 80s for some inland areas, though this warmth won’t last long. Cooler, more active weather digs into the Central U.S., and by the end of the two-week period, New England returns to seasonable conditions.
Precipitation overall trends at or slightly below normal, with the best rain chance late this week into Friday. After the holiday weekend, the next bump in shower chances comes with the return of warmth in early September, with about a 30 percent chance of pop-up storms around the 4th, 5th, and 6th.
The bottom line: No big heat, no big chill, and no sign of extreme weather swings in this two-week stretch – just the seasonal transition from late summer toward early fall.
And don’t forget – we’re just two days away from the launch of New England’s first weather streaming network, available right at the top of the 1DegreeOutside app.
