Sunday Special Edition: Snow Filling In…
Latest Timeline, Amounts
& Impacts

Snow is filling in across New England this morning – light at first, then quickly intensifying. Expect a fast slide from manageable to difficult/treacherous travel as steadier & heavier bands lock in.

  • Ramp-up: After 1–2 hours of light snow, bands strengthen quickly to ~1″/hr, then peak 2–4″/hr mid-afternoon until about midnight.

  • Thundersnow & near-blizzard: Gusty NE winds this evening at the coast → blowing/drifting and brief whiteouts; blizzard criteria may briefly verify in a few coastal spots.

  • Mix window (brief): Outer Cape/Nantucket may mix with sleet or flip to rain near/just before midnight, then back to snow overnight as temps fall.

  • Monday isn’t done: Snow lightens after midnight with intermittent lulls, but on/off light snow continues much of Monday, adding a couple more inches, especially Cape as it flips back. Back edge clears W→E ~4–6 PM west, ~6–8 PM east.

  • Power & coast: Pockets of outages possible (heavy, pasty coastal snow + wind). Minor coastal splash-over possible in eastern MA Monday morning.

  • Cold: Subzero wind chills persist in northern New England through the event; single digits for many in southern New England by Monday PM–night.

Snow amounts

  • Widespread 12–18″ central & northern New England; 8–12″ north of there with 6–8″ → 4–6″ toward the far crown of ME.

  • Southern & eastern New England: 18–24″ common, with localized 24–30″ potential from Boston–Newton–Quincy/Weymouth/Hingham/Norwell and a second Merrimack Valley axis (Haverhill → Amesbury → Kingston NH → Hampton).

  • Cape & Islands: 12–18″ most of the Cape; lower near Nantucket (around 12″) due to mixing before flipping back.

Bitter Cold

  • Very minor or coastal splashover during the pre-dawn high tide Monday at the coast in the most vulnerable spots.

  • Where temps do go above freezing (far southeast MA) expect a quick freeze up Monday afternoon as the temps crash

  • Wind chill sub-zero Monday evening & overnight & only in the single digits Tuesday
