Thursday Insights:
Severe Drought Expands, Kiko Heads Towards Hawaii & Patriots Season Opener!

After some early showers, most of Friday is dry with breaks of sun. You’ll notice the difference, though – humidity increases, with dew points climbing into the 60s. Highs run 80–85° south, 70s north. Winds increase 10-20 mph, gusting 20-30 by afternoon.

Saturday: Storms, Some Strong

Saturday brings warm, sticky air with highs well into the 80s, close to 90° in southern New England. A cold front sweeps in Saturday afternoon into evening, triggering scattered thunderstorms. Not everyone will see a storm, but those that form may produce:

  • Brief damaging wind gusts

  • Heavy downpours

  • Lightning

  • Small hail

  • Even some rotation in stronger cells

Timeframe: 2–8 PM Saturday. It’s a day to be weather aware if you have outdoor plans.

Sunday into Monday

Sunday starts with lingering showers or light rain, especially Cape Cod, the Islands, and eastern Maine. Gradual clearing develops north and west. Highs hover near 70°.

Drought Monitor Update

New data show severe drought expanding by nearly 11% across northern New England, now encompassing central Maine, northern NH, and portions of northern VT. Much of the northern half of New England is in moderate to severe drought, with Cape Cod and Nantucket still in long-term moderate drought as well. Some northern locations rank in the top five driest three-month stretches on record.

So we could use the rain! Predicted precipitation through this weekend:

  • 1–1.5”: far northern & western New England

  • 0.25–0.75”: farther south/east, depending on thunderstorms

  • Less: immediate South Coast

Tropics Update

  • Pacific: Major Hurricane Kiko (Cat. 4) will weaken this weekend from wind shear and cooler waters, but Hawaii may see heavy rain & gusty winds by mid-week. Hurricane Lorena will weaken as it crosses Baja and brings tropical moisture to northern Mexico and the Desert Southwest.

  • Atlantic: A cluster of thunderstorms in the central Atlantic may become Tropical Depression Gabrielle by the weekend.
