Thursday 1°Outside Today/Noyes’ Notes:
Rain, Thunder,
Localized Flooding

Today is an active weather day across New England as widespread rain, downpours, and localized flooding take center stage. Meteorologist Danielle Noyes reports that rainfall totals will generally fall in the 1–2 inch range, but some areas could pick up 3–4 inches or more if repeated heavy downpours track overhead.

This is the first time in weeks that umbrellas and raincoats are a must for the kids heading out to school. Expect an “indoor recess” kind of day with showers and embedded thunderstorms lingering through the afternoon and evening. Ponding on roads and hydroplaning will be a concern during both commutes, so allow extra travel time.

Temperatures hold in the 50s and 60s through most of the day, reaching near 70° in spots where the warm sector sneaks in. Southern New England carries the greatest risk for an isolated strong or severe thunderstorm with gusty winds and lightning later this afternoon and evening.

By Friday morning, showers will be fading in southern and eastern New England, but clouds will linger to start the day. Northern New England will see lower totals – closer to a quarter to half an inch – while southern areas may be dealing with locally higher rainfall amounts.
