A steady, light snow is with us today – slick local roads, but treated interstates hold up at times. The farther southeast you are, the more snow you’ll see. Cape & Islands: ocean-enhanced bands may push localized totals near/above 6″. Arctic air surges in tonight with single-digit/teen lows and subzero wind chills; Monday stays cold with highs mainly in the 20s.
Snow today: Generally light for most of New England, but heavier bands SE MA/Cape/Islands
Back edge timing: Through Worcester ~midday, toward 495 ~2 PM (spotty); lingers longest on the Cape/Islands
Totals: Many areas ~1–2″ north & west; higher SE, Cape/Islands near ~6″ in ocean-enhanced bands
Roads: Local/untreated roads turn slick; chemically treated interstates often do OK, but expect variable conditions
Tonight: Deep freeze — single digits/teens; subzero wind chill
Monday: Highs mainly 20s; wind chill teens even at day’s warmest
The storm is organizing along a frontal boundary to our south, then strengthening south & east of New England. That keeps the core of the system offshore but close enough for ocean-enhanced snow to flare on the Cape & Islands, where rates can briefly hit 0.3–0.5″/hr. Inland, most spots see light but steady snow for several hours, commonly 0.1–0.2″/hr.
Central MA / Worcester Hills: Snow tapers around midday; spotty flakes linger just east into early afternoon.
I-495 corridor: Back edge near/after ~2 PM in spots; variability expected.
Greater Boston / coastal plain: Light snow continues into the afternoon; improvement late day/evening.
Cape & Islands / South Shore: Longest duration with ocean-enhanced bands this afternoon/evening; improvement later tonight.
Shovel window: If you want the best cleanup, wrap up by ~6–9 PM. After that, temperatures drop sharply and the snow crusts/freezes.
Cape & Islands: 3–6″, locally over 6″ where ocean bands sit.
SE MA (inland South Shore into northern RI/SE MA): 2–4″, locally higher toward the south coast.
Greater Boston & inner suburbs: ~1″ (spotty coating to 2″).
I-95/I-495 belt to central MA & interior S NH: ~1–2″ typical; variable by band placement.
Farther N/W (S VT/SW NH into the Champlain Valleys & Adirondack side): Little to nothing after a morning coating.
Remember: Totals are highly dependent on band placement; small wobbles make big differences near the northern edge.
Untreated roads/sidewalks: Slick at times today; steady light snow can create a thin, persistent coating.
Highways: Chemically treated interstates often keep pavement wet/slushy, but brief upticks in rates can overwhelm treatment.
Visibility: Lower in steadier bursts SE MA/Cape; allow extra distance, use low beams, and take it slow.
Tonight: Refreeze is likely area-wide as temps plunge.
Lows tonight: Single digits to teens (coldest inland); subzero wind chills in many interior spots.
Monday highs: 20s (teens north). With a light breeze, wind chill holds in the teens even at the warmest time of day.
