What a stretch of summer weather we’ve had across New England – dry air, sunshine, cool nights and seasonable afternoons. That all changes by the end of the week as heat and humidity return in full force. Friday looks to be the peak of the heat with high temperatures ranging from the lower 90s to an outside shot at 100° in parts of southern New England. Dew points climbing into the 70s will make it feel even hotter, with heat indices 100-106 expected.
But before the intense heat arrives, Wednesday offers a slow ramp-up with highs in the 80s inland and 70s along the coast, where sea breezes will kick in. Dew points remain in the 40s and 50s- so comfortable by July standards.
Thursday will be warmer, with high temperatures climbing to 90–95° across southern and central New England. A southwest wind will limit sea breezes, even warming the coast. By Friday, a cold front will begin to sink south from Canada. While much of southern New England may stay dry through most of the day, the northern half of the region – particularly northern Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine – will be under the gun for scattered showers and storms. Damaging wind gusts, frequent lightning, and torrential downpours will be possible, though an isolated risk.
As we head into the weekend, the frontal boundary may linger across southern New England. That raises the potential for pop-up storms – especially in southwestern areas – Saturday and Sunday, but much of the region may end up dry. Bottom line: don’t cancel outdoor plans! Highs will be cooler, mainly in the 80s inland and 70s at the coast, with a gradual decrease in humidity.
