Wednesday 1°Outside Today/Noyes’ Notes: Tropical Humidity Moving In; Start of a Steamy Stretch

Wednesday marks the beginning of a steamy stretch across New England, and it’s not just the temperatures you’ll notice- it’s the humidity. According to Matt Noyes of 1DegreeOutside, today brings the first dew point readings of the season near 70°F for many in southern New England. That kind of moisture content in the air means a sticky, muggy feel will take hold by this evening, even though high temperatures themselves won’t look extreme on the thermometer. Expect highs in the 70s to around 80°F – seemingly modest, but it’ll feel warmer due to the moisture in the air.

As that muggy air settles in, a few scattered showers and embedded thunderstorms will pop up during the day, particularly in northern New England where the warmth and humidity will arrive a bit earlier. Matt notes that a sneaky strong thunderstorm could be embedded within these showers, especially later in the day and early evening. For central and southern areas, the showers are fewer and farther between, with maybe a quick-moving one overnight as more warm air pushes in.

By Thursday, the warm and humid air mass is fully in place – and that’s when we’ll see temperatures surge toward 90°F or higher in many spots, setting the stage for strong to potentially severe thunderstorms as a cold front sweeps in. Friday and Saturday offer some relief with more comfortable air, but this break is short-lived. A longer, more intense stretch of heat begins Sunday, potentially peaking with 95 to 100°F highs early next week, which will feel even hotter with the humidity factored in.
